Meet Sophie

Sophie, a 39-year-old Assistant Head teacher from London and mother of a 1-year-old baby, has been renting with her partner since 2010. Sophie has always been keen to own rather than rent, but, like so many of her generation, taking that first step onto the property ladder has been hampered by the need for a large cash deposit (particularly in London, where property prices remain on a continuous upward spiral). 

Undeterred, she managed to save up a healthy £80,000 and found a 3-bedroom mid-terrace house in Streatham, valued at £465,000, which was perfect for a young family. With an offer on the house accepted, Sophie approached a well-known high-street bank to arrange a mortgage. 

Things began well, but soon ground to a halt due to a ‘technical glitch’, and all communication with her bank suddenly became non-existent.
